Here at the ShaqFu Radio blog HQ, we’re big fans of the fun-and-games reality TV shows. All the crazy sports shows, the musical and comedy acts. All cool. Now one of the most popular reality shows – well, sort of reality – has a newfound connection to our man Shaq. Read on to find out more…
We’re talking about Fox TV’s “The Masked Singer.” Have you seen it? Pretty crazy, and pretty cool. Huge, crazy costumes that completely hide who is inside. Robots, birds, butterflies, aliens, you name it.. They’ve all been “masked singers.”
The costumed singer comes out and performs a song or two, while a panel of guest “experts” try to guess (or figure out) who’s inside the costume. It can be a lot of fun, and some pretty insane guest singers have shown up. Being Star Trek fans, one of our favs was seeing the original Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, appear on the show as a knight in shining armor, complete with a “trusty steed.”
Shaq already has a connection to the show, dating back to the very first season. O’Neal made an appearance in the opening monologue of episode one. On the show, Shaq talked about finding clues to try to figure out the singer’s identity.
On the latest show, a “masked singer” in a really amazing hummingbird costume talked between songs and answered the judges questions…and in doing so, made a quick comment that has sports fans buzzing. Hummingbird said, “I’m excited for the kick-off of Season 8 because I promise you, this hummingbird knows a thing or two about competition. It’s in my DNA.”
So, does that mean this particular masked singer is a sports personality? Some current on-field or on-court superstar? Of course that’s the entire reason for the show, to keep us in the viewing audience hooked to find out who it is. Of course, by the time you read this post, the singer may have already been unmasked. But for now, we’re enjoying the suspense.
Basketball star? Maybe. Hummingbird said: “I got my start with the help of Shaquille O’Neal and formed a patriotic team that felt like family. Together, we dominated the Super Bowl. My career has been a revelation. But I’m only human. I’m so nervous to step on that stage tonight. But here we go! I guess it’s all or nothing.”
Shaq? Family? Super Bowl? Wow…that’s a pretty wide-ranging list of connections. There’s talk that Hummingbird could be Peyton Manning or maybe even the GOAT, Tom Brady. NFL fans will remember that Brady was absent from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp for a little more than a week before the start of the regular season. Hmmm….
BTW, the Knight was on that first show of season 8…that’s where we found William Shatner was the man behind the mask! Another costumed character that has since been eliminated from the show was a giant Hedgehog. We later found out it was Eric Idle behind the mask.
Stay tuned! It’s going to be interesting to find out who’s inside the giant hummingbird costume, and to see what their connection to Shaq – if there really is one – truly is.
