It’s that time of year again… Shaq-a-Claus isn’t “coming to town” (as the old song goes), for some communities, he’s already been there, done that! And when we say “that,” we mean the big gift-giving holiday party thing. Sweet!
This year, O’Neal – as Shaq-a-Claus – made several appearances, delivering food, fun and gifts to kids and families. As always, there were miles of smiles all around.
First, Shaq headed to the town of South Fulton, Georgia, not far from one of his homes in neighboring McDonough. In a party co-sponsored by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, Shaq put on a party for kids and families at the local Welcome All Park.
Talking to local reporters, Shaq was quick to point out that his mom was the one that had the original idea: “I’d like to thank Dr, Lucille O’Neal, my beautiful mother. She created Shaq-a-Claus 22 years ago and you know, I’m just doing my part.”
Shaq says over the years, he’s brought in lots of friends and businesses to keep the Christmas ball rolling. Shaq: “Know there’s a lot of babies that will not wake up with any toys on Christmas day. So we’re just trying to do our part. Let’s go take care of these babies.”
But that’s not been the only appearance for Shaq-a-Claus this year. Last week (as of this writing), the NBA Hall of Famer and Christmas giving superstar also visited Wesley Lakes Elementary School in McDonough. More than 750 kids attended this big party.
Along with his Christmas events in Georgia, Shaq’s personal Foundation will spread even more holiday cheer in Las Vegas, New Jersey, and Orlando with the help of local and national sponsors.
More from Shaq: “This season can make some kids feel left out or different from their peers. Every child deserves to experience the holiday magic and hosting these events keeps that joy alive. Thanks to the generosity of my sponsors, we can celebrate together, have great fun, make memories, and the kids go home feeling good.”
This year, Shaq-a-Claus has some purple elves helping him. Members of Omega Psi Phi fraternity pitched in with O’Neal holiday parties. The big man was involved with the fraternity back in his days at LSU. Look carefully, you’ll see those Greek letters on Shaq’s purple Santa cap.
As readers of the ShaqFu Radio blog know, our man Shaq is one of the most generous and helpful guys you’ll ever meet (if you are lucky enough to even meet him in person). He’s genuinely happy to share resources and his bigger-than-life spotlight with people doing good work in communities around the nation.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
