Huge, awesome, amazing and positive news for fans of the NBA and the best analysis show on TV about the game. Of course we’re talking about “Inside the NBA” on TNT (what else were you thinking, people?) Here’s the deal: Our man Shaq is IN to stay with the Inside crew after this season ends.
Shaquille O’Neal’s larger-than-life presence on TV is proving just as dominant as his days in the paint— and now, it’s paying off in a big way.
The Hall of Famer has locked in a long-term contract to remain with TNT Sports, reportedly earning more than $15 million per year, according to Front Office Sports. That’s right, Big Diesel is securing the bag yet again.
This comes at a major turning point for Inside The NBA, the wildly popular show that has been a staple of basketball coverage for years. With TNT losing NBA media rights, the network is licensing the show to ESPN and ABC starting next season, ensuring that Shaq, Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith stay in the spotlight.
There had been plenty of speculation about whether the legendary crew would stick together. Barkley, however, put an end to any doubts when he confirmed he’s staying put for the remainder of his 10-year contract (seven years left). Johnson and Smith are also expected to stay on board, keeping the chemistry intact.
The news about Shaq’s new deal dropped just a day after he joked that the whole crew was “getting fired anyway” following an appearance by Marshawn Lynch, who got a little too comfortable with his word choice on live TV. Classic Shaq.
At 52 years old, Shaq has built a post-NBA empire, making nearly $300 million during his playing career and raking in even more from endorsements and business ventures. Now, he’s among the highest-paid broadcasters in the game, proving once again that his dominance isn’t limited to the hardwood.
While Inside The NBA is moving to new territory, the heart of the show remains the same. It’ll still be produced by TNT in its Atlanta studio, though there may be a few fewer episodes per season. And with ESPN now involved, Shaq and the crew could be seen on even more shows across the network.
One thing’s for sure— whether he’s dunking on fools in the post or cracking jokes behind the desk, Shaq always finds a way to win.
